Chair Prof. Dr. Johannes Binswanger Johannes Binswanger holds the Chair for Business Economics and Public Policy – with a main focus on executive education. We are very grateful to Dr. Josef Ackermann for his generous support. Economics The main mission of our Chair is to make participants of executive education familiar with the most important elements of how modern economies work. Participants learn to appreciate how their business activity is embedded in the bigger framework of general economic developments. They develop a good intuitive understanding of the evolution of economic processes and the role of institutions involved therein (e.g. central banks). We are convinced that this supports our participants in taking better decisions in their own businesses. In our courses, we make use of innovative teaching material that we develop specially for executive education, such as cartoon stories, interactive web applications, special discussion formats, and more. Digitalization In light of the ongoing digitalization and data-driven nature of our modern world, we are convinced that these topics should get substantially more attention in university curricula. We develop supplementary academic programs that shall enable our graduates to responsibly deal with the opportunities and challenges of a digital world. This includes, for instances, that they develop a good understand of what big data analysists are able to achieve – and what not. An important initiative in this domain is the development of a new interdisciplinary “certificate program” on the Bachelor’s level. Research We have ongoing research projects on the political-economy aspects of major policy reforms. “Big data” leads to an enormously increased capacity to measure economic variable and thus the (apparent or effective) success of policy initiatives. Our aim is, among other things, to understand how this affects politicians’ incentives to initiate policy reforms in the first place.
